First, get familiar with how real money feels. Genuine bills have a distinct texture thanks to raised printing. Run your fingertip across the President's coat - you should feel the ridges. Fake bills often feel too smooth or too papery.
The color-shifting ink on newer bills is a great security feature. Tilt a bill, and watch the number in the corner. Real bills shift from copper to green or from green to black, depending on the denomination. This isn't just for show - it's hard for counterfeiters to copy.
Security strips are built into genuine bills. Hold one up to the light, and you'll see a thin strip running from top to bottom. Each denomination has its strip in a different position, and it shows that bill's value when you look closely.
Watermarks are another key feature. Hold the bill up to the light, and look for the faint image that matches the portrait. If there's no watermark, or if it doesn't match the portrait, that's a red flag.
Don't forget about UV lights and counterfeit detection pens if your store has them. But remember - these are tools to support your judgment, not replace it. The best defense is knowing what real money looks like and feels like.
