Hey Sales Associates! Welcome back to "Smoke Break." I'm Mike Hernandez, and today we're tackling something challenging - handling cash accurately when your store is super busy.
Rush hour really tests your cash handling skills. You've got customers lining up, everyone's in a hurry, but here's the thing - accuracy still comes first. Moving fast while staying accurate is an art, and I'm going to help you master it.
Start with your setup. Before the rush hits, organize your drawer perfectly. Having bills neat and facing the same way saves precious seconds when making change. Keep your most-used bills where they're easy to reach.
Here's a pro tip - when taking cash during busy times, say the amount out loud as you receive it. "That's twenty dollars from you." Place it where you can see it, separate from other cash. This prevents confusion if a customer questions the amount later.
Counting change back becomes even more important when you're busy. Work from coins up to bills, saying each amount. This actually saves time because it prevents mistakes that take longer to fix. Plus, customers appreciate knowing you're being careful with their money.
Multi-tasking is great, but not with cash. Even during your busiest rush, handle one cash transaction at a time. Finish completely with one customer's money before touching the next. This keeps everything clean and clear.
Here's your check-in question: What three ways can you prepare your cash drawer before a busy rush to help you handle transactions more efficiently?
Take a moment to think about it. Consider both organization and security.
Your actionable item for this week: Practice counting back change quickly while staying accurate. Time yourself, but only count a transaction as successful if it's both fast and correct.
Remember, speed comes from smooth, practiced movements, not from rushing. The best cashiers are the ones who look relaxed even when they're busy.
